Anna Politkovskaya was a fearless Russian reporter who regularly wrote for Novaya Gazyeta – on the the country’s few independent journals. Not only did she work to expose government corruption and genocide, she also demanded democratic accountability. On October 7th, 2006, she was shot and left for dead by an unknown gunman in the lift of her Moscow home. A crime for which no one has been convicted.
Film maker Eric Bergkraut struck up a friendship with Politkovskaya while making a documentary about Chechnya, and Letter to Anna is a personal tribute as well as an investigation into the suspicious circumstances surrounding her death. Featuring archival interviews with the late reporter, as well as contributions from colleagues and loved ones, Letter to Anna paints a portrait of a brave and elegant journalist, and also of a nation who, in suffering her unsolved murder, have taken another step back from the truth, freedom and democracy.
