Wild Art: Olly & Suzi

Wild Art: Olly & Suzi

Olly and Suzi are a partnership of modern artists, poised on the threshold of huge international success, who have a genuine mass appeal. The basis of their work is to travel to some of the remotest corners of the globe, and interact with predators in the wild. They often work in collaboration with top experts in their field – be it scientists, trackers, or cameramen.

Working together hand over hand on the same paper at the same time, they paint and draw predators in situ, in the very moment they encounter them. They have followed polar bears across the tundra together at the North Pole, they painted underwater just inches from the gnashing teeth of a great white shark, and they have tracked wolves for days to capture a simple drawing. Olly & Suzi leave the artwork for the predator to interact with, and they photograph and film the event.

The images they create are startlingly beautiful; a shark attacking a painting of itself, a pack of cheetahs inspecting a large paper portrait, a pack of wild dogs feeding on an image of themselves. A lot of these encounters have been filmed by wildlife cameramen, so there is a fabulous archive.

Director Rupert Murray has been following the artists for some time, and this summer he will travel with them to Tanzania, where Olly & Suzi’s artistic interactions began, to a protected game reserve for wild dogs and rhinos. With the footage from this trip, along with more formal interview set-ups, we will build up a broader profile of their life and work.
