Grierson Awards 2009

November 2nd hosted the annual Grierson Awards, a celebratation of innovative and exciting new documentary films of 2009.

This year film-maker Norma Percy claimed awards for both Best Documentary Series and the Coveted Trustees’ Prize at the awards.

Percy won The Best Series Prize for Iran and the West the British documentary strand was shown in February 2009 on BBC2 to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1979 Iranian revolution.

Percy also received The Trustees’ award for her work over the past 30 years, including the multi-award-winning documentary The Death of Yugoslavia.

Other awards:
More4’s Afghan Star, a look at Afghan popular culture, won the Shell International Best Documentary on a Contemporary issue.

In The History Today Best Historical documentary category, director John Dower won with his Thriller In Manilla , a film about boxing royalty Mohammed Ali.

Sheffield Doc/Fest also works in conjunction with The Grierson Trust to present Grierson:Sheffield. There are three awards presented by the Grierson Trust which include the Green Award, which recognizes documentary achievement in environmentalism and climate change.
